Ethnic Cleansing (1999)
Artist Note: The tall strokes (capable of producing letters but beside the point) were written with spacing but a sliver of white (counter, letter, word, & interlinear). It took me a few years to find my simplicity. My purpose was to make texture unbelievably simple and unreadable, texture being the common denominator of all oohs and aahs of looking at it -sighing before a word was translated. The student work bedazzled me and I took back ten times what I gave away. I use the texture both as background and as words of the text. Readability is beside my point: calligraphy can conceal the art but never the hand (Edward Johnston).
Watercolor, gouache, colored markers, pointed brush, Speedball and Tape nibs, Elmer's glue, on 15 x 23" 400-lb Arches deckled watercolor paper.
